Running isn’t just about exercise. For some it’s a test of self, for others it’s a way to overcome life’s biggest obstacles. This was on full display at the first ever Las Vegas Marathon on November 4, 2024 where thousands from around the world showed up to run from the beautiful Red Rock Canyon to the lively Fremont Street Experience. Each runner had their own story, their own reason for doing it—and some of their stories are just incredible.

Redefining life with every mile: Derek Stefureac’s story with MS
For Las Vegas local Derek Stefureac, running was more than a sport; it was his way of fighting back against multiple sclerosis (MS). Diagnosed in 2011, Derek had a choice to make—continue smoking which his doctors told him would accelerate his need for a wheelchair or find a healthier way. He chose to run.
When Derek started jogging he noticed something strange—a limp in his left leg.
“It was like an MS symptom I didn’t even know I had,” he said. The limp could have been a sign to stop but Derek chose to push through, to go further each time. What started as one mile of limping turned into two, then three and eventually marathons with no limp at all. For him running was more than a physical feat—it was a daily fight for mobility, health and life on his own terms. “Now I’m running marathons with zero limps and it’s a blessing,”
he said.
A second chance at life: Kevin Schroeder’s post-cancer running journey
For Ohio native Kevinc Schroeder the Las Vegas Marathon was his 38th race—but it wasn’t just another finish line. At 35 Kevin received a life changing diagnosis: prostate cancer. Given just four weeks to live he turned to running as a way to cope with the mental and physical struggles that came with his diagnosis.
What started as a way to deal with his diagnosis turned into a passion, Kevin fell in love with the rhythm, the focus and the challenge of racing. Now cancer free he’s running as a reminder of the life he was given back.
“The best day is race day,”
Kevin said,
“the marathon community is a constant source of motivation. Everyone is together, we’re all running, cheering for each other—it’s a great experience.”
What makes the Las Vegas marathon unique
The Las Vegas Marathon is quickly proving itself as more than just another race. It starts at Red Rock Canyon, known for its rugged, picturesque views, and ends at the bustling Fremont Street Experience, making it a unique mix of scenic beauty and Vegas-style entertainment. With participants from around the globe, this inaugural race has already set a high standard, combining the thrill of running with the excitement of Las Vegas.
For Derek, Kevin, and many others, this race was a chance to share their personal battles with others on the same path. Running here wasn’t about competition—it was about the support, the shared experience, and the undeniable magic of crossing a finish line that represents so much more than just miles.
Running for health, strength, and community
Every runner at the Las Vegas Marathon had their own story, whether it was for a cause, in memory of someone, or for the pure joy of the sport. What united them all was a sense of resilience and determination. And in a city known for its lights and entertainment, this event brought a refreshing twist—a day where thousands celebrated life, health, and community with every step.
