It’s always great to hear about people doing good things, right? Well, here’s a story that’ll put a smile on your face—especially if you care about kids getting a fair shot at education. The Las Vegas Rotary Club has once again shown its dedication to helping Nevada’s children by donating $25,000 to Spread the Word Nevada, a charity focused on childhood literacy. And this isn’t just a one-off thing. The club’s been at it for years.

A Decade-Long Commitment To Childhood Literacy
This year’s donation marks the 12th annual contribution from the Las Vegas Rotary Club to Spread the Word Nevada. Since 2011, they’ve donated a massive $264,000 to help this organisation get books into the hands of underserved kids and promote reading programs. That’s a lot of kids getting their hands on books they might otherwise never see.
And here’s a fun fact: Longtime club member Tom Thomas has been going above and beyond by matching the club’s grants dollar for dollar for the past seven years. So, every donation from the Rotary Club has basically been doubled thanks to his generosity.
Why Literacy Matters More Than Ever
If you think about it, being able to read well is the foundation for pretty much everything. As Kirk Alexander, president of the Las Vegas Rotary Club, put it:
“For more than a decade, the Las Vegas Rotary Club has been committed to empowering young readers and fostering a love of learning. We believe literacy is the foundation of success, and we are proud to continue our support of Spread the Word Nevada’s important work.”
He’s not wrong. If kids can’t read properly, their chances of doing well in school—and in life—plummet. Helping kids discover the joy of reading can change their entire future.
The Bigger Picture: The Club’s Broader Giving Efforts
And here’s the thing: This donation is just part of a much bigger effort. During the 2023-24 fiscal year, the Las Vegas Rotary Club donated a whopping $271,000 to various local and international charities. Oh, and let’s not forget their Santa Clothes program, which raised $120,569 to provide clothing for kids in need.
Their support reaches well beyond books. They’re tackling food insecurity, funding community service organisations, providing UNLV scholarships, and even supporting elementary schools and youth programs like TLC, RYLA, the Dan Stover Music Competition, and the 4-Way Speech Contest.
Why It All Matters
The Las Vegas Rotary Club’s dedication to helping kids and communities isn’t just a nice gesture—it’s a real investment in the future. When kids learn to read, they can learn to do anything. And when communities have organisations willing to step up and support them, everyone benefits.
So, the next time you hear someone say people don’t care about making a difference, you can tell them about the Las Vegas Rotary Club and their ongoing mission to make sure every kid in Nevada has a chance to fall in love with reading.
