Why north Las Vegas needed a new fire station

With North Las Vegas being the fastest growing city in Nevada it’s no surprise we need more emergency services to keep up with the growth. Fire Station 58 will serve over 30,000 residents in the Tule Springs area and is part of a larger plan to make North Las Vegas safer and more connected.

According to North Las Vegas Fire Department’s Chief Joseph Calhoun, the city has seen rapid growth and adding more services is a priority. “We’re working hard to make sure we can properly serve the people here,” Calhoun said. This is the city’s 9th fire station and will help take the strain off other stations, reduce response times for emergencies and provide space for more trucks and equipment.

A look inside Fire Station 58

Fire Station 58 is more than just a building—it’s a modern home for firefighters. 14,000 square feet of space with 11 private dorm rooms, a fully equipped gym, a common lounge and a commercial kitchen. Firefighters work 48 hour shifts before rotating out so the station is designed to feel like a second home.

Chief Calhoun calls it more of a “firehouse” than a station.

“They live here for 48 hours and are off for 96 hours. This is their home away from home and it’s supposed to be comfortable.”

Instead of traditional classroom style training rooms Fire Station 58 has a high-tech, flexible meeting space for training, community events and other activities.

State of the art equipment and services

Station 58 can handle it all – fires to rescues. At opening the station will have a ladder truck, a rescue unit and a Battalion 15 command unit. There’s room for more equipment as the city grows. Fire Department Supervisor Scott Schuster and his team have been outfitting the new vehicles with everything needed to respond quickly.

The building of Fire Station 58 was part of a larger deal with local developers. The Villages at Tule Springs and Valley Vista funded and built the station to support the new neighborhoods they’re building. This partnership will ensure residents in those areas are protected and response times are short.

Building Relationships

For Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown the new fire station is about more than public safety – it’s about community.

“This fire station is a big part of our 2025-2030 North Las Vegas Strategic Plan,” s

he said. “It’s about being safe and building relationships with the community.” The plan is for a safe, connected and welcoming city and Fire Station 58 fits into that.

Along with shorter response times, the station will give firefighters a place to connect with residents, visit schools and attend local events. The mayor hopes to see these firefighters become a familiar face in Tule Springs.
