Las Vegas is known for its bright lights and big personalities, and the city has handed out one big honor to one of its favorites. The city officially declared December 16, 2024, Billy Gibbons Day with a proclamation ceremony at City Hall. The date might seem like just another day on the calendar, but it means the world to a man who’s been bringing light and joy to audiences for over five decades.

A Rock Icon Gets His Due
Las Vegas Mayor Brian Knudsen made the announcement flanked by Gibbons, his wife and a classic Las Vegas showgirl. The mayor said,
“We, the Mayor and members of Las Vegas City Council, do hereby take great pride in proclaiming December 16, 2024, as Billy Gibbons Day.”
Why Billy? The mayor’s proclamation says it all. Gibbons is the guitar-wielding founder and lead vocalist of ZZ Top, aka “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.” But before he and the band’s iconic beards made musical magic, Gibbons fronted the Moving Sidewalks, opening for Jimi Hendrix in Texas in the late 1960s. In 1969, he founded ZZ Top, and the rest is history – a career spanning decades of blockbuster albums, unforgettable performances and that trademark eyewear, headgear and facial foliage.
Why Billy Gibbons is a Las Vegas Hero?
Texas is Billy’s home, but he’s also a Las Vegas hero. And for good reason. The city has been good to him, and he’s been good to it. Over the years, he’s brought his signature brand of blues-rock to the stage, and his kindness and generosity have benefited the community. According to the proclamation, Gibbons has “entertained, inspired and helped shape the culture of our great city for 55 years.”
Rock Fans Only: Billy’s Hendrix Story
Here’s a good one, folks. Gibbons related that in 1968, his band the Moving Sidewalks opened for none other than Jimi Hendrix.
“We covered Foxy Lady and Purple Haze,”
he said.
“I was 15 years old and pretty damn brave, I thought.”
After the set, Hendrix came up to Gibbons and said,
“I’m Jimi Hendrix. I like you. You’re brave. I like that.”
What This Celebration Means
Billy Gibbons is so much more than one rock icon. He represents the way music brings people together. From covering Hendrix songs in his teenage years to bringing the house down on the Las Vegas Strip, Billy’s story is one of passion, persistence and plain old fun.
If you’re in Las Vegas on December 16, now you know what to celebrate. And if you’re a ZZ Top fan, crank up “La Grange” or “Sharp Dressed Man” to toast the occasion.
Here’s to Billy Gibbons – a rock ‘n’ roll hero who proves what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas. It comes home with you.
